Every spring, the same question comes up for gardeners: which seed companies should you choose?

With so many brands, varieties, and options—organic or conventional—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. And yet, one key element is often overlooked: the quality of your soil.

Here are a few simple guidelines to help you make the right choices for your garden.

1. Organic or regular seeds: what’s the difference?

The main difference lies in how the plants were grown to produce the seeds.

Organic seeds

Organic seeds come from plants grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers, using certified organic methods.

Benefits:

  • More environmentally friendly production

  • Often well suited for natural gardening

  • Ideal for gardeners who want a fully organic garden

Good to know:

  • Usually a bit more expensive

  • Sometimes a more limited selection

  • Regular seeds

Regular seeds are not necessarily organic, but that doesn’t mean they are lower quality.

Benefits:

  • Wider variety available

  • Often more affordable

  • Excellent germination rates

For many gardeners, regular seeds produce great results in the garden.

2. Hybrid or heirloom?

You’ll often see these terms on seed packets.

Hybrid (F1)

Hybrid seeds are created by crossing two varieties to achieve specific qualities.

For example:

  • Better disease resistance

  • Higher yields

  • More uniform fruits

However, seeds saved from these plants won’t produce the same results the following year.

Heirloom varieties

Heirloom varieties have been grown for generations.

Benefits:

  • Often exceptional flavor

  • Wide diversity of shapes and colors

  • Ability to save and reuse your own seeds

3. How to choose a good seed brand

Not all companies are equal. Here are a few things to look for:

✔ A reputable company

✔ Clear information on the packet

✔ Germination rate or production year

✔ Varieties suited to your climate

For gardeners in Ontario and Quebec, it’s often best to choose seeds produced in Canada, as they are better adapted to our seasons.

4. Soil: the most overlooked factor

We talk a lot about seeds… but without good soil, even the best seeds won’t perform well.

For indoor seedlings

Use a seed-starting mix that is:

  • Light

  • Well-draining

  • Ideal for young roots

  • For outdoor gardens

Focus on:

  • Rich soil

  • Compost to nourish the soil

  • The ideal mix

For best results:

  • 60% quality soil

  • 30% compost

  • 10% drainage material (perlite or sand)

Good soil allows for:

  • Better growth

  • Stronger plants

  • Improved water retention

5. The most common gardening mistake

Many gardeners think they need to buy the most expensive seeds to succeed.

In reality, success depends more on:

  • Soil quality

  • Sunlight

  • Watering

  • Timing

Even simple seeds can produce a beautiful garden.

6. The best advice: try different varieties

Every garden is different.

A good approach is to:

  • Test several tomato varieties

  • Try different types of lettuce

  • Discover new vegetables each year

That’s often how you find your favorites.

🌱 Gardening is also an adventure

Every seed is a small promise of a harvest…

but it’s the soil and the care you give it that make all the difference.

And sometimes, the best surprises are the ones you didn’t plan 🌿
